Meet Cesar Sanchez: Sava School of Surveying’s 1,000th Graduate

Following our recent announcement that the Sava School of Surveying has reached 1,000 residential surveying graduates, we’re delighted to have caught up with Cesar Sanchez who crossed the finish line to help us achieve this milestone and is now enjoying a rewarding career in residential surveying. Read Cesar’s story, from Specsavers to professional surveyor with Arnold & Baldwin.

About Cesar

What were you doing before training as a surveyor, and what pushed you to make the change?

I spent 19 years working at Specsavers, gaining extensive experience in optics and developing a range of transferable skills. I progressed to the role of retail manager, overseeing a busy central London store, but I felt like I’d reached a peak in that profession and was ready for a new challenge.

Why did you choose the Sava School of Surveying as your route into the profession?

A family member introduced me to the Sava School of Surveying and their surveying diploma. I had no prior experience in the field or any relevant qualifications, so I did my due diligence and carried out thorough research to make sure it would work for me. Having looked at university degrees alongside the Sava diploma, I felt that Sava’s Diploma in Residential Surveying and Valuation offered the best opportunity for someone like me who was looking to enter the surveying profession from another industry.

About Cesar’s training experience

What did you think of the training you received?

The training was extremely thorough and, although intensive, it delivered a best‑practice approach to surveying, so I feel like it prepared me well for the role. I attended a combination of in‑person classroom sessions and online meetings and had access to an array of high‑quality learning materials which were all readily accessible through Sava Learn, the online learning platform. And the trainers were extremely knowledgeable – I made sure to learn all I could from them in the time we had together.

What was the highlight of your Sava training experience and why?

The highlight of my time on the course was meeting new people and making connections from a range of backgrounds who were all working towards the same goal. I also really valued the opportunity to meet and learn from the experienced surveyors who delivered the training – nothing beats learning from those who have done the job.

“Their training provided me with all the essential skills and knowledge I needed to truly understand surveying at its core…I’m now employed by an award-winning surveying firm and I couldn’t be happier.”

How does it feel to be part of this growing community of Sava School of Surveying graduates?

It feels fantastic to be part of something bigger like this. It’s a great community and I’m excited to join other members of the Sava alumni in hopefully supporting future learners throughout their surveying journey. Making the move into a new profession can be nerve‑racking, and I would be more than happy to offer guidance and support to anyone who needs it.

About your career and the Sava School of Surveying

What have you been up to since qualifying and how has your day-to-day life changed?

My life has changed a lot. I was able to secure a role with a fantastic surveying firm towards the end of my qualification, which was a huge motivation to sprint to the finish line. From day one they’ve provided me with excellent support, training, and guidance – and I’m loving it. Every day I continue to learn something new and grow as a surveyor, and thanks to the Sava School of Surveying, I have strong foundations to build on.

What do you enjoy most about the job that people might not expect?

I’m always surprised by how different and unique each property is, and there is always something new to learn. You never quite know what you’re going to find until you get on site. I’m enjoying developing my understanding of all the different construction types and their nuances – it really helps to build your confidence.

As our 1,000th surveying graduate, what would you say to future Sava learners just starting out?

Persevere! Push forward and keep the end goal in mind. The course can be very challenging, especially when balancing work, family, and other commitments, but Sava has a dedicated support team who are always available to help – whether you need technical support or some friendly words of motivation to keep you on track.

What do you think this 1,000th graduate milestone says about Sava’s impact on the industry?

The Sava School of Surveying has opened the door for many of us who might not otherwise have had access to the profession. The Sava team should be extremely proud of what they have achieved. I believe this is only the beginning for Sava, with many more milestones yet to come – and I’m excited to be part of it.

If we revisit you at the 2,000th graduate milestone, where do you hope to be?

I aim to be the best surveyor I can be, continuing to learn as I go. You don’t just stop learning once you qualify – the world of surveying is always evolving. As I progress my career, I look forward to exploring some of the other opportunities within the profession, and as I gain more experience, I will potentially look at working towards MRICS or FRICS status. I’m just starting out so happy to see where the career takes me.

Course fees and time commitment are often worries for those considering further study. Having now achieved your diploma, is there anything you would say to prospective learners to help alleviate these concerns?

This was something I worried about initially, but Sava’s monthly payment options, along with support from my family, allowed me to invest in myself and commit to this course. It was excellent. It needs to be a considered decision, but it’s worth it if you want a professional and rewarding career in property surveying.

Would you recommend the Sava diploma to others looking to join the residential surveying profession?

I would wholeheartedly recommend Sava’s Diploma in Residential Surveying and Valuation to anyone. Their training provided me with all the essential skills and knowledge I needed to truly understand surveying at its core. They have a dedicated team of surveyors and trainers who guide you every step of the way and allow you to learn at your own pace. I’m now employed by an award-winning surveying firm and I couldn’t be happier.
